Notes: The Australian Imperial Force (AIF) established a military training camp at Mena, near Cairo in Egypt, in late 1914. Here we see local Egyptians crushing barley to feed the many horses that had accompanied the Anzacs. The photograph comes from an album belonging to Major Richard Casey, who served in the AIF during the war and later, as Lord Casey, became Australia’s Governor-General (1965–69). This photograph is page 19 of the album.
